Welcome to Part 3 of my Howick Historical Village series. Today we’re at Bell House - the home of the monthly Village Farmers' Market.  So who exactly were the Bells? The Bell family were one of the early settler families in the Howick area, and their home is one of the most iconic buildings in the village. It’s beautifully preserved, but normally closed to the public to protect the interior. A lot of the furniture and items inside are original or historically significant, so they only open the space during special events to keep everything in good condition.  Every first Sunday of the month, the village brings Bell House to life with the Bell House Market. It’s their way of connecting the community with the village’s history - using the space the same way early settlers would have used their homes: as a gathering place, a trading spot, and a social hub. The chosen date isn’t tied to the Bell family specifically, but it creates a consistent rhythm for locals and visitors to look forward to. It also helps support the village’s restoration projects, events, and educational programs.  The market itself is such a vibe - local makers, small businesses, handmade crafts, baked goods, art, vintage finds. Welcome back to Part 2 of my Howick Historical Village series. Today we’re diving into the history behind this place - why it exists, and what it’s here to teach us. Howick Historical Village is a living museum that brings the 1840-1880 period back to life. It was created to preserve the stories of the early Fencible settlers - families who came from Britain to help protect Auckland in its early years. Instead of letting these stories fade, the community built this village so future generations could see, touch, and walk through the world these settlers lived in. Their goal is simple but powerful - to keep history alive in a way that books can’t. Every cottage, tool, and tiny detail shows how people cooked, worked, learned, and survived in the 19th century. It’s not just a museum - it’s a reminder of how far Aotearoa has come, and the people who helped shape it. The village also hosts special events throughout the year - live demonstrations, reenactments, workshops, themed days, and the Village Farmers' Market at Bell House on the first Sunday of every month.
